Join Upstate Yoga on retreat for 6 days of yoga and pilates, sunshine, delicious meals, rainforest adventures and plenty of time for you to relax and rejuvenate.

The retreat will be held on the mystical island of Langkawi, South East Asia's first UNESCO World Geopark. The location has been mindfully chosen as an undiscovered hidden gem with untouched lush rainforests, mountainscapes, and a quaint local vibe which provides you with the most tranquil and immersive setting to take you away from the hectic stresses of daily life. 

You will be led by sisters Gail and Charelle on a journey self discovery as you deepen your yoga and pilates practice whilst exploring the island and its local culture on daily adventures. You will enjoy nutritious daily meals, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, delicious and lovingly prepared from locally sourced ingredients. To make sure you return home feeling truly restored, you will also enjoy being pampered on a luxury spa day.

Set in a tropical rainforest, the resort has always given the natural environment priority even when it was being built. Perched on a forested hill slope, rooms were built around existing forest trees, resulting in an environment where the jungle and the resort live in unanimous harmony. The sense and feel of the jungle replete with chattering monkeys, noisy cicadas and spectacular hornbills ever present and all-pervasive, as you awaken to the sounds of Mother Nature and if you're lucky, with beautiful creatures perched on your balcony.

It is the perfect setting for you to truly unwind, reset and relax as you immerse yourself in the lush tropical rainforest, whilst enjoying the comforts and luxuries your beautiful rooms have to offer. All rooms are thoughtfully appointed to function as a home away from home, also offering satellite tv and in-room wifi for you to stay as connected or as switched off as you desire. 





Studio rooms are comfortably configured with king or twin beds and en-suite bathrooms. Each room is fully air conditioned and equipped with a kitchenette (refrigerator, microwave oven & electric kettle). Catch a glimpse of the thriving plant and animal life from the outdoor lounge area of your own room.

Suite rooms are luxuriously spacious, configured with a four poster king bed and en-suite bathroom. Perched on a hilltop, you will enjoy spectacular views of the Andaman sea, surrounding islands and mountain range from your large outdoor balcony. Enjoy luxuries such as an outdoor wooden bathtub and plenty of outdoor lounging areas. The room is also conveniently equipped with a kitchenette (refrigerator, microwave oven & electric kettle).

Two Bedroom Cottage


Two bedroom cottages are configured with 1 king bed and 2x super singles; each room with its own ensuite bathroom. The cottages enjoy plenty of shared lounging space such as a dining area, kitchenette and outdoor lounge area - perfect for a group of friends or 2 couples.

You are able to book a Single/Twin Share room in the cottage and be paired up with other yogis, or book the entire cottage as a group of 3 - 4 (2x Twin Share or 1x Single/2x Twin Share). Please let us know your preference in the registration form.


The program




You will begin each day on retreat with an energising sunrise practice (Power Flow/Power Pilates), followed by a nutritious breakfast.

On two days of the retreat, this will be followed by a carefully curated half-day Upstate island excursion that takes you on a journey to explore all the untouched natural beauty island has to offer. You will return to the resort after lunch, with plenty of free time for you to enjoy the spa, lounge by the beach (a mere 5 minute stroll away), explore the local area or simply relax in the resort.

If you're feeling adventurous, jump on a jet-ski, go paragliding or on a hike up the mountains. We will also be able to organise your own island adventure if you desire. 

On one day of the retreat, there will also be a 2 hour Yin Yang workshop in the afternoon which combines all the things we know and love about Upstate:

Stability of Pilates, Strength of Vinyasa and Stillness of Yin

Each evening at 6pm, we will reconvene at the resort to commence a relaxing sunset practice (Yin/Slow Flow/Bikram) enveloped by the sounds of nature. This will be a grounding restorative practice to nurture your body and mind as the day winds down. There is then the opportunity to mingle over cocktails by the pool followed by a scrumptious dinner.

All your meals (B/L/D) will be catered for during the duration of the retreat either at the resort or out and about on excursions. Expect to enjoy a variety of nutritious cuisine, locally sourced and absolutely delicious - some even served on traditional banana leafs. 


Sisters and business partners Gail and Charelle have been teaching yoga for over a decade and opened their first studio in 2009.  Their philosophy is to make yoga and pilates accessible for everyone.  An experience where we sweat, challenge ourselves, create friendships and to have fun.

Gail believes yoga and pilates are a winning combination for the body and the mind.  Pilates gives the body amazing stability and strength combined with the flexibility and holistic benefits of yoga.

Teaching yoga for over 10 years Gail is a certified in Vinyasa, Bikram and Sculpt Yoga.

With an interest in yoga therapy, Gail has most recently completed  Yoga Medicine training with Tiffany Cruishank.  Gail is also certified in mat and reformer pilates.

You will enjoy Gail’s positive and friendly vibes during her classes with a focus on alignment and form.

It was Charelle’s personal injuries that got her addicted to yoga. With a bulging disc and painful sciatica she found that Bikram Yoga was her therapy. A testament to the healing powers of consistent yoga practice, Charelle has been teaching Bikram Yoga since 2007.

Charelle too loves the combination of yoga and pilates. Charelle teaches Core+ Hot Pilates and is a certified in mat pilates.

Her energetic and encouraging style will keep you engaged and focused.

We welcome everyone from all walks of life - whether you are an experienced yogi or you've never set foot on a mat before, you will be welcome into the Upstate family with open arms. This will be 6 days for time out, relaxation and transformation, where you will discover your best self and meet some amazing individuals.

All classes will be catered to your experience level and whilst there will be yoga on offer, participation is entirely up to you.

Upstate Yoga + Pilates is all about creating a positive state of mind everytime we hit the mat. It is an experience where we challenge ourselves whilst also getting quiet right here, right now to empower yourself to live loud and stretch into your full potential.

In between classes, we have curated a selection of activities allowing you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of Langkawi’s lush tropical rainforest and be pampered on your vacation. All activities are completely optional and included within the retreat at no extra cost.

There will also be plenty of free time to unwind, relax and pamper yourself. Lounge on the sunbeds down on the beach, relax by the pool, treat yourself to some TLC at the resort spa or get adventurous on a jet ski adventure or nature trek through the tropical rainforest!



Cable car & Skybridge

The Mat Cincang mountain range is one of the oldest rock formations in Southeast Asia. To experience it fully, you will have exclusive early access to an exhilarating aerial cable car ride over the forest canopy and up the mountain escarpment to the summit at 708 metres (2,323 feet). This is one of the world's steepest cable car rides. 

You will then have the once in a lifetime opportunity to be led on a yoga flow class at the peak, as you marvel at the breathtaking 360-degree view of Langkawi’s verdant mountain flora below, vast coastline, 550 million-year-old sandstone outcrops, waterfalls, and even the surrounding Thai islands of Koh Tarutao, Koh Adang and Koh Lipe.

Geopark Safari

Embark on a thrilling naturalist led boat adventure as we cruise towards the Kilim Karst Geoforest park - South East Asia's first UNESCO World Heritage site.

You'll journey into the hidden landscapes and observe the natural beauty of the dense green mangroves as we navigate through limestone caves, waterways and canyons where wildlife gather in trees and along the riverbanks.

You may even glimpse upon elusive otters and dancing dolphins as we explore this magical ecosystem.

Spa Day

Indulge in some well deserved TLC with a complimentary 60 mimute massage at a luxury spa, then enjoy the sunset relaxing on the sun beds by the beach or a refreshing swim in the ocean. 

Wind down for the evening with a private champagne dinner hosted in the beautiful float pavilion.


Check-in is at 2pm, however please ensure you arrive by 4pm on 24 April 2018. The best way to get to Langkawi from Australia is to fly via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. We recommend:

Any cancellations prior to 31 Dec 2017 - $500 non-refundable deposit;  

Cancellations from 1 Jan 2018 - 1 March 18 - 50% refund of total retreat price.

No refunds for any cancellations post 1 March 2018.


Travel Insurance

All participants must have adequate travel insurance which covers all adventure sport activities, medical emergencies, lost baggage, baggage or flight delay and trip cancellation.
